The origin and history of the breed American Shorthair

There is a version that the history of the American Shorthair breed starts from the moment when Norwegian forest cats, who arrived in America in the company of the Vikings, crossed with cats of immigrants from Portugal and Spain.

There is another version, according to which American Shorthair cats are descendants of British Shorthair.

However, be that as it may, American shorthair cats throughout the history of the breed were "workers". They performed an important function: they destroyed rodents that multiplied at a terrible speed. Spartan life has turned American shorthair cats into hardy, independent, fearless and proactive creatures.

For a long time in the USA the breed was called "domestic shorthair", and only in 1966 it received the name "American Shorthair".

Modern American shorthair cats are slightly larger than their ancestors.
