Weimaraner Health and Disease Prevention

Weimaraners are prone to a number of hereditary diseases.

Digestive system

The inversion of the stomach is the stretching and twisting of the stomach. Symptoms: pain, vomiting. May be fatal.

Oncology

Histiocytosis - multiple nodules on the skin or ulcers, matastases in the lungs and other organs. Symptoms: lethargy, weight loss, lack of appetite.

Breast sarcoma is a palpable formation in the skin and subcutaneous layers. Symptoms: lethargy, loss of appetite. The disease can give metastases to other parts of the body, ulcers may appear.

Endocrine system

Hypotheriosis is a violation of the functioning of the thyroid gland. Symptoms: loss of hair, rough scaly skin, weight gain.

Addison's disease (primary hypocorticism). Symptoms: lack of appetite, vomiting, apathy, weight loss, tremors, diarrhea. Sometimes weakness occurs, fainting occurs.

Lymphatic and circulatory system

Granulocytopathy (leukocyte adhesion protein deficiency). It is fraught with increased susceptibility to bacterial infections, persistent leukocytosis.

Factor XI deficiency. Symptoms: moderate bleeding, worse after surgery or injury. It can be deadly.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Clinical symptoms do not occur.

Hemophilia A - prolonged severe bleeding due to impaired clot formation. The dog may die.

The cardiovascular system

Esophageal diverticulum - an abnormality in the development of the aortic arch leads to blockage of the esophagus.

Tricuspid dysplasia. Symptoms: poor appetite, weight loss, apathy, heart murmur.

The immune system

Demodecosis is a local mite lesion. Itching may be severe, or may be absent altogether. The muzzle is usually affected. As a rule, the disease goes away by itself 6-8 weeks later.

IgG deficiency - repeated bacterial infections due to neutrophy dysfunctions and lack of IgG. The dog becomes susceptible to infections.

T-cell defect - increased susceptibility to infections, especially viral. These dogs are characterized by dwarfism.

Skin and mucous membranes

Acne Symptoms: follicular papules of different sizes on the muzzle. Ulcers may appear.

Dermatorexis - vulnerability and hyperelasticity of the skin.

Juvenile cellulitis. Symptoms: the muzzle appears swollen due to an increase in lymph nodes (cervical and submandibular).

Pemphigus vulgaris. Symptoms: the appearance of erosion and ulcers under the armpits and on the mucocutaneous borders.

Seborrheic adenitis. Symptoms: faded, brittle, dull coat, oily skin.

Umbilical hernia. A protrusion of the skin is observed on the abdomen, in which internal organs can be located. May pass without treatment.

Nervous system

Cyst of the arachnoid membrane of the brain. The development of cysts can lead to compression of the spinal cord.

Cerebellar worm hypoplasia - the cerebellar crest does not develop. Manifestation: a staggering uncoordinated gait.

Hypomyelination - damage to the central nervous system. Symptoms may vary, the most common are tremors of limbs, torso, head, impaired coordination.

Spinal dysraphia - manifested in impaired gait, scoliosis, widely spaced legs. Such a dog can lead a normal life.

Eyes

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens that can lead to blindness.

Corneal dystrophy - clouding of the cornea with visual impairment, but without an inflammatory process.

Erosion of the iris can occur in lacrimation, photophobia, sudden pain in the eyes.

Dystrichiasis is the wrong arrangement of eyelashes, causing eye irritation.

Entropy (century inversion). The eyelid is wrapped inward, as a result of the eyelashes rub the eyeball.

Progressive retinal atrophy - cell degeneration leading to blindness.

Reproductive system

Cryptorchidism is undescended testes.

Hermaphroditism - gonads of both sexes are present.

Skeleton

Limited calcification is the deposition of calcium in the skin and subcutaneous tissue.

Craniomandibular osteopathy is an abnormal growth of the bones of the lower jaw, head or limbs.

Dwarfism - a violation of the skeleton, leading to a decrease in size compared to the norm. May be proportional and disproportionate.

Hip dysplasia can lead to lameness or complete immobilization of the dog.

The back of the bifid (cleft spine) can manifest itself in weakness of the hind legs, fecal incontinence. Possible lack of skin, muscles and spinous processes of the arches of the vertebrae in the lumbosacral region.

Spondylolisthesis of the cervical spine - an anomaly of the cervical vertebrae, causes a malfunction of the hind limbs (up to paralysis).

Urinary system

Primary glomerulopathies. Onset may be asymptomatic. Possible lethargy, bad breath, oral ulcers, weight loss, increased thirst, decreased appetite, and vomiting.

Glomerulonephropathy of Weimaraner.
